Viscoelastic monitoring of starch-based biomaterials in simulated physiological conditions

چکیده
Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was used to investigate the solid-state rheological behaviour in a starch-based thermoplastic aimed to be used in different biomedical applications. The tested samples were processed by different injection moulding procedures. The dry samples were immersed in a simulated physiological solution and the relevant viscoelastic parameters were monitored against time. The decrease of stiffness due to swelling can be followed in real time, being less pronounced for the composite sample with hydroxyapatite (HA). The temperature control of the liquid bath was found to be very good. Frequency scans were also performed in wet conditions in samples previously immersed during different times, indicating that DMA is a suitable method to control in-vitro the changes on the viscoelastic properties of biomaterials during degradation. © 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Microhardness of starch based biomaterials in simulated physiological conditions.
In this work the variation of the surface mechanical properties of starch-based biomaterials with immersion time was followed using microhardness measurements. Two blends with very distinct water uptake capabilities, starch/cellulose acetate (SCA) and starch/poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (SPCL), were immersed in a phosphate buffer solution (PBS) at 37.5 degrees C for various times. The microhardne...

Apart from favourable physico-chemical and mechanical properties, the most important requirement for a biodegradable polymer to be used in medical applications is its biocompatibility and the non-cytotoxicity of its degradation products. Their combined effect should assure the safe material degradation under controlled kinetics. The present work analyses the degradation behaviour of blends of c...
متن کاملDynamic mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite-reinforced and porous starch-based degradable biomaterials.
It has been shown that blends of starch with a poly(ethylene-vinyl-alcohol) copolymer, EVOH, designated as SEVA-C, present an interesting combination of mechanical, degradation and biocompatible properties, specially when filled with hydroxyapatite (HA). Consequently, they may find a range of applications in the biomaterials field. This work evaluated the influence of HA fillers and of blowing ...

Emulsion stability, viscoelastic rheological properties and particle size distribution of French dressing samples formulated with two types of commercial modified starch have been investigated. The product’s usual thickening agents, xanthan and guar gum, were 100% substituted by (2, 2.2%) of acetylated distarch adipate (ADA) and hydroxypropylated distarch phosphate (HDP) from waxy maize starch....

Microencapsulation with hydrocolloids as a modern technique has been used to prolong the survival of probiotics during exposure to harsh conditions. In this study, alginate-Hylon starch microcapsules with genipin cross-linked chitosan and poly-L-lysine coatings were developed to encapsulate four strains of probiotic bacteria, including Lactobacillus casei (ATCC 39392), Bifidobacterium bifidum (...
